History of jenny
Sid and Jenny Craig moved to Australia in 1982 hoping to establish “a company that would incorporate all the necessary benefits of successful weight management.”
In early May 1983, they achieved their goal and Jenny Craig opened its first nine Weight Loss Centre’s in Melbourne, all of which still stand today, Collins Street Melbourne, Doncaster, Frankston, Preston, Knox, Moonee Ponds, Ringwood, and Cranbourne.
Since the initial opening in 1983 Jenny Craig Australia and New Zealand has expanded to over 100 centres across the two countries. Each component of the Jenny Craig Weight Management Program has also progressed over the past 25 years to fuel our company’s growth and ensure we remain one of Australia and New Zealand’s leading Weight Management companies.
Upon moving to Australia, Sid and Jenny endeavoured “to find the most credible doctor, psychologist, dietitian and nutritionist who would help design a program according to the Australian guidelines and health needs.” Because weight-loss heavily relies on behaviour modification, they saw it as necessary to employ people who understood the psychology of weight-loss. To ensure this they visited the Australian Medical Association and Melbourne University where they met Dr. George Santoro, who helped create our program and still resides on Jenny Craig’s Medical Advisory Board today.
Today the Jenny Craig Program reflects many of the key principles originally incorporated by Jenny Craig herself. To ensure that the program continues to be based on sound scientific research, we still employ an expert Medical Advisory Board consisting of renowned health practitioners in the areas of nutrition, psychology, exercise physiology and lifestyle change. Our own team of Accredited Practising Dietitians designs the menus and develops the program, while working closely with the Medical Advisory Board to ensure we incorporate the most effective strategies for long term weight loss and healthy lifestyle change.
Another vital part of the Jenny Craig Program was and still is our cuisine. The first Jenny Craig menu consisted of approximately 15 items, which included a few canned products: chilli con carne, beef stew, chicken soup, and a few other kinds of soups, tuna salad, and chicken salad. Also chosen for the initial line were some boxes of dried foods including cereals and pancakes.
Today, Jenny Craig’s food portfolio is quite diverse with over 70 dry and frozen products on the menu at any one time, and also incorporates fresh fruit and vegetables. Over the year’s Jenny Craig has tried to adopt flavours from around the world to add variety to the menu repertoire, and cater for our growing multicultural nation. We employ a professional team of dietitians, food scientists and food technologists to develop our meals, and still use some of the same suppliers Sid and Jenny employed 25 years ago. Before menu items are considered suitable and approved for distribution, each item goes through a rigorous process of alterations and taste testing. Today, one of the most recent and exciting elements of the Jenny Craig cuisine is that clients now decide which meals will appear on the menu through participating in Jenny’s taste testing trials.
