I’ve struggled with my weight for most of my life and over the years I've been on every diet known to man but even though I'd lose the weight initially, I would always put it straight back on again - and I would usually end up heavier than when I started!
I became somewhat cynical about diets in the end and ate to make myself feel better about being overweight! Friends and family would tell me I looked fine and I didn't need to lose weight, but only I knew how I was feeling. My clothes were getting tighter and tighter and I'd eat to make myself feel better about it - the diet was always going to start on Monday (but I didn’t specify which Monday that would be!)
One day I saw the Jenny Craig ad with Mel B showing off her new body and I realised that I hadn't given the JC program a try. I told my partner what I wanted to do and his response was 'they'll laugh at you and send you home! You don't need to lose weight'. This was the response I got from everyone, but again, I knew how I felt and knew I needed to lose some weight so I picked up the phone and called JC, made an appointment and never looked back! And guess what ..... my consultant didn't laugh at me!
The food was fantastic and if there was a meal that didn't suit my taste buds, I could swap it for something else. Most important of all was my consultant! She has been amazing and probably the most important part of the whole program. We built up a rapport over the weeks and she was my conscience when I had 'lapses' and was eyeing off a chocolate biscuit! I knew I had to go and weigh in each week and I really didn't want to let her down. On a couple of occasions I did gain weight instead of losing it, but she reassured me that this was completely normal and helped me to re-focus on my goals for the coming week.
When I reached my goal weight I was ecstatic! It was the culmination of a roller-coaster ride of dieting and gaining weight that I'd ridden all my life and I felt like a huge burden had been lifted from my shoulders. My daughter and partner were so proud of me and could see the difference in the way I was feeling about myself.
I am now on the Maintenance Program and this is where JC is different from all the other diet programs. Usually you lose the weight, they congratulate you and you go home only to return to your old eating habits! On the JC program you reach your goal and your consultant works out how many kjs you can eat to maintain your weight! This is the perfect way to re-train yourself while eating meals you prepare yourself. And you've got the added benefit of monthly weigh-ins to help keep you honest!
In amongst all of this I was offered the opportunity to take part in the new ad campaign for Jenny. I couldn't believe it! I am the person who runs from the room whenever a camera comes out and now I was going to be on tv and I was going to meet Mel B - the person who convinced me to join the program! It was the most exciting experience ever and one that I'll never forget. If someone had told me 12 months ago, that I would do something like this, I would have laughed. It was also an important step for me because it took me out of my comfort zone and showed me a side of myself that I didn't know existed! For me it was also a lesson in life - we need to push our personal boundaries in order to grow because otherwise we will never know what we are really capable of!
