Stay on track towards your weight loss goals, even after a slip up

We’ve all been there. You’ve had a moment of weakness and before you know it, the kids’ leftovers, corn chips or salted caramel ice cream is all gone.

What happened?

Well, like many other determined dieters on a weight loss program, you succumbed to temptation and fell off the wagon. It all happened so fast… one minute you were thinking: “Stuff it, I deserve a treat.”  Next minute your tummy is aching and you feel awful.

This a crucial moment in your journey. The decisions you make now are vital to both your weight loss motivation, and your progress.

Do you give up, beat yourself down, and stray away from your healthy eating program? That’s a one-way ticket to gaining back the weight you’ve lost and staying in the vicious circle. Or, do you dust yourself off, forgive yourself and begin again? Forging ahead is the only option.

But how?

Holding on to your weight loss motivation: forgive yourself and move on

No more regret or guilt. Pay attention to the voice in your head. Chances are that voice is rather nasty. When you catch yourself in a self-critical mode, stop your train of thought and replace it with a more positive mindset. To stay on track with your weight loss goals, repeat phrases like this in your mind till it becomes habit:

  • “I’ve learned from that mistake and I put it behind me”
  • “This way of thinking is not helpful”
  • “It’s not true that I’m a failure destined to struggle forever, I simply had a slip”
  • “I am in control of my thoughts, and I choose to think something else”

Practising self kindness: draw a line in the sand

Don’t let a bad choice at lunch derail your day. So you had cake at afternoon tea? That’s no reason to scoff takeaway for dinner. Get back on your weight loss program fast. Not tomorrow, not next Monday, or next month. Today… right now!

The quicker you get back on track, the less impact your slip up will have on your progress. Don’t let a tiny blip in your weight loss motivation turn into a huge upset.

Staying focused: remind yourself of your weight loss goals

Why do you want to create a healthier lifestyle?

Perhaps you want to improve your health, gain more energy or better manage a specific condition. Maybe you just want to look better in skinny jeans, or be a great role model for your kids.

Whatever the reason, remind yourself of your weight loss goals and start to believe that you can achieve them.
