‘Tis the season for parties (insert party popper sounds!), when everyone gets a chance to let their hair down and have a good time.
Except that not all of us find the office parties scene quite so fun. All that mingling, dressing up and trying not to embarrass yourself around co-workers can equal dread of these annual occasions.
Never fear! There are a few things that can help you have a great time this festive season.
Plan your outfit early
Wearing clothes that you feel comfortable and confident in can make all the difference.
As soon as you know what the event will be, you can begin planning the clothing choices that will have you feeling your best. If you’re not sure about the dress code, ask the person in charge of organising the party or chat with your team about what they’re thinking of wearing (at the very least, you’ll all be in the same boat).
Carpool with a friend
Catching a lift with a work friend means you have a buddy for the night and won’t have to hang around awkwardly until your friends arrive. Just make sure it’s someone who doesn’t want to stay into the late hours if you’re keen to make an early departure.
Pace yourself at the bar
If you’re planning on drinking alcohol, try swap between an alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage throughout the evening. It’s always a good idea to have a drink (whether it’s non-alcoholic or otherwise) in hand, to make you feel like you’re part of the action.
If in doubt – think of conversation topics ahead of time
Office parties are a good time to avoid talking about work and get to know your colleagues on a different level. Not comfortable with small talk? Try to come up with some conversation ideas before you go, to avoid those awkward silences.
And now, all that’s left to do is get in there with your team, and have a great time!
