How can your BMI help you with weight loss?

Being aware of your body is a really confronting thing when starting a weight loss journey but it’s really important that we acknowledge where we are starting and where we want to be at the end. Often we are in denial about exactly how overweight we are and when we are given a number and told we are not in a healthy weight range, it can be very upsetting. However, keeping an eye on your own BMI can help you as you can track your progress towards your weight loss goals, very quickly and easily.

Your personal Jenny Craig Consultant can design a weight loss program that allows you to achieve a healthy body weight efficiently. Why is having a healthy BMI important for women?

If you are of child bearing age you should be aware that being in an unhealthy BMI weight range has implications for your fertility levels. Many women have found it difficult to conceive due to being overweight. So, having a healthy BMI is especially important at this time of your life. Creating a weight loss plan before you try for a baby will not only increase your chances of becoming pregnant, but it will also set you up with healthy eating and exercise patterns that will be invaluable once you have a family of your own.

For women who are past child bearing age, this is a time when you can carry a little extra weight around your waist. Often, this is the first time in your life that you have tipped over into an unhealthy weight range. A specifically tailored weight loss plan from the Consultants at Jenny Craig is the perfect antidote to creeping weight gain. A renewed focus on your health is really important at this time. What we eat, and how we burn off the energy that our food gives us, is critical to maintaining our BMI in a healthy weight range.

At what BMI should you consider weight loss?

If you calculate your BMI and find that the amount of body fat you carry means that you are in the overweight or obese range, you need to consider weight loss as soon as possible. The health benefits of reducing your BMI are indisputable.

Being in an unhealthy weight range means that you are more likely to die than people within a healthy BMI range. You are more likely to suffer from back pain, knee pain and all sorts of ailments like heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, high blood pressure, strokes, and even some cancers. Compared to these problems, weight loss looks easy. We know it’s not that simple, but if you are in the overweight or obese weight range, we here at Jenny Craig can help you achieve your weight loss goals with a specially prepared program that includes menu options and regular exercise.

Of course, you should always seek professional medical advice before embarking on a weight loss plan. You need to take all of your physical needs into account.

Is BMI the best way to measure your weight loss?

BMI is not the only way to measure weight loss but it’s a very simple, non-invasive method that is endorsed by the World Health Organisation and the Australian Department of Health. The BMI is calculated using a simple equation (your weight, divided by your height squared). For example, if your height is 1.7 metres and your weight is 70kg the equation looks like this:

70 ÷ (1.7 x 1.7) = 24.2 BMI.

Knowing the fat content of your body is an important part of being self-aware. Sometimes, being confronted with numbers that indicate that you are in an unhealthy weight range is motivation enough for people to start looking at weight loss options.

Other ways to track your weight loss are to take regular photos of yourself as you travel along on your weight loss journey. As you lose weight, you will notice many other weight loss victories that have nothing to do with the scales and the numbers they give you. Your clothes will become less restrictive, you may even need new ones! Your body will start to enjoy exercise again.

Your Jenny Craig Consultants are there to support you every step of the way to make the changes you need in your life.
