5 Winter Workout Essentials

Whether you’re heading outdoors for a chilly walk with the dog or heading to a circuit training session indoors, make sure you’re well-prepared for your winter workout routine. Jenny Craig recommends moderate exercise for 30 minutes, 5 times per week, or if you find exercise challenging, just being as active as you can. Exercising outdoors can be a great way to help beat the winter blues and stay in shape this season.

Get the most out of your workouts by wearing the right type of clothing, and taking steps to protect yourself from the elements. If you get too cold or are wearing clothes that weigh you down, you could set yourself up for injury and also lose motivation to work out altogether. Here are five winter workout essentials you need for your winter exercise regimen:

1. Moisture-wicking tops.

A long or short-sleeved top made with moisture-wicking materials are perfect to layer under a lightweight sweatshirt or zip-up hoodie. These pieces of clothing will provide warmth yet flexibility, so you’ll find it easy to move around.

2. Wind-resistant jacket.

A weather-appropriate jacket is essential when exercising outdoors during winter, or even just leaving the gym on a cold winter’s day. Zip yourself up in a water-proof, wind-resistant jacket so you can keep the cold and rain far away from your skin. These jackets are perfect for those harsher winter days and help prevent your clothes from becoming wet and cold.

3. Gloves

Our hands are often forgotten about when we think of cold-weather exercise gear. Keep your hands toasty-warm by investing in a pair of gloves to wear when you go cycling or running this winter.

4. Sunscreen-infused lip balm.

Don’t let your lips suffer from the harsh winter temperatures this season. Moisturise and protect your lips with a high-quality lip balm infused with sunscreen. Apply a thick layer of SPF lip balm before heading outdoors to exercise to help avoid sun damaged, dry, flaky lips this season.

5. Weather-resistant footwear.

Whether you’re trekking through the rain and frost with the dog or your family, or just making your way across a wet and slippery car park outside the gym, make sure you’re not setting yourself up for an accident with the wrong type of footwear. Invest in some good quality runners with good traction so you don’t end up slipping and sliding yourself to the ER!
